Ongoing Maintenance

 NATURE DOESN’T TAKE A BREAK.

And neither can we. While we get to come home at the end of a long sailing trip, and sleep safe and sound in our beds, Odyssey doesn’t have that luxury. She is subject to the forces of nature 24/7 365 days a year. While that may not seem extreme at first, remember that things like wind, rain and bodies of water are often what carve the landscapes we see around us. A single river carved a majority of the Grand Canyon.

Wind, waves, tides, UV rays, snow, and hail are just a few of the elements Odyssey is subject to. If they can effect the formation of of the landscapes we see around us, imagine the struggle to keep them at bay when what you’re trying to protect is a mere wooden vessel. And at 82 years old, Odyssey has seen her fair share and has her scars.

If you would like to donate money, time, expertise, parts or equipment toward one of our maintenance projects, we encourage you to reach out and let us know! We look forward to including you in our efforts to preserve this working national treasure.

ONGOING & UPCOMING PROJECTS:

  • Head system overhaul: Due to recent WA State Legislature, our current head (bathroom) system is no longer viable. So a complete overhaul of the system is necessary to bring Odyssey into current standards.

  • Hull Repainting: Every few years, Odyssey’s hull needs another coat of paint to keep her looking her best.

  • Brightwork: “Brightwork” is the nautical term for varnished wood. And while varnished wood looks pretty, it is difficult to maintain in the PNW. Every year we have to apply 5-6 coats of varnish to our brightwork to keep the wood protected.

  • Repaint Deck: The deck was last repainted in 2011 so Odyssey is rather overdue for a good deck repainting.)

  • Mizzen sail: Fix or replace. Sails are subject to wind, water and worst of all, UV rays which all work together to deteriorate our sails over time.

  • Misc. Projects: While our operations are limited due to Covid-19 we are taking the time to get a lot of little projects completed. Things like fixing hatches, lockers, upholstery & updating our organization methods.
